Philippines Temporarily Bans Gorebox After Deadly School Shooting

The Philippine government has temporarily blocked the hyper-violent first-person shooter mobile app Gorebox after a rare school shooting in Tacloban left three students dead and 20 wounded. The shooting was allegedly planned and carried out inside a classroom on Monday by two minors aged 15 and 14, who claimed they were motivated by school bullying. Investigators discovered that the 14-year-old suspect—who cannot be legally charged due to his age—was a player of Gorebox and frequently posted violent content online. While scientific studies do not link video games to real-world violence, the country's cybersecurity agency instituted the ban to assess the platform’s potential influence. The weapons used belonged to a policewoman aunt and a grandfather’s security agency, prompting lawmaker Chel Diokno to call for stiffer penalties for adults who give minors access to firearms. In response to the tragedy, Philippine senators have launched an inquiry into online radicalization, and the education ministry expressed grave concerns over preventing American-style copycat mass shootings.
